In Chapter 7, paragraph 2, Douglass provides more evidence and conviction that slavery corrupts the slave owner or in this case, Mrs. Auld, the slave owner's wife. Keep in mind that 19th century America was also known for its cult of domesticity and sentimentality—the belief that women were the moral standard bearers in American society. What does it say about society if a woman can behave as Mrs. Auld does?
If women behaved as Mrs. Auld does, then society would be in better condition. First, it would have a huge impact on the slave owners. If the women were involved in the slaves educational life, then there would be a tremendous decrease in the number of slaves owned as well as the slave owners. In addition, if the slaves gain knowledge, then that will enable them to escape from the slave life and make better decisions to avoid becoming enslaved again or at all. Therefore, if there were more women like Mrs. Auld, it will allow the men (in this case Mr. Auld) to mature from the slave time period and become better as a leader of the Human race.

In my opinion, I think its saying that society is unfair. Most of the women have to listen to their husbands and follow their example. After Mrs. Auld has now owned a slave she understands more on the way you have to treat them from her other peers, like her husband. She was nice in the beginning but I think owning a slave had an influence on her that changed who she was. Society is also saying that slavery had bad effects on people, whether it was slave owners, the slaves, or the people that witnessed slavery.

If women could behave like Mrs.Auld it would make the Society better. At first she was a kind hearted women and most of the women in that time spand were mean. after owning a slave she kind of formed in to someone meaner, by owning a slave she felt authoritive. Many people were scared that if slaves got an education they would take over, and thay believed if a slave was educated the would no longer be slaves. Its saying that slavery had bad effects on people, everyone who witnessed it.
If women behaved as Mrs. Auld did in society then many slaves would be educated, literate, and determined. By her educating slaves they would realize that they are capable of much more in life and thay would be over-qualified when it came to being a slave. This wuold also lead to them trying to get out of slavery so they could have freedom . Mr.Auld understood this concept that is why he instructed his wife (Mrs.Auld) to not teach the slaves because they would then become useless.

Personally, I believe that Mrs.Auld is evidence that slavery corrupts slave owners. Like Shannon said, woman listen to the man of the house. It is stereotypical, but still to this day many in society believe its the right thing to do. At first, Mrs.Auld was nice and caring. Then, her husband pressured her, for example "under influence, her precious heart became stone," said Fredrick. If women behave like Mrs.Auld, stereotypes wont change. You should not let your husband control you just because society says its right.

It shows that in society at this time slavery was spreading like a disease. Even someone who may not have felt that a slave was a lesser class of person could have their mind changed. It shows that when people get a taste of power it corrupts them and causes their vision to be skewed into not noticing anything wrong. What happened to Mrs. Auld is an exact paralell to what was happening to society at this time. Ignoring the inhumanity of slavery just because it made them feel powerful.

If woman acted like how Mrs.Auld society would be different than it is today because they'll be willing to help others like Mrs.Auld did to help Fredrick Douglas and would be much more nice and kind. Also they will be motivators to help us become better like Mrs.Auld because she help Fredrick learn his ABC's.

Personally, this shows how self-dependent Ms. Auld is. The novel describes Ms. Auld as a very tranquil and kind-hearted woman, but it had a short time remaining that way because of her views of slavery. Her husband was a slave owner and she felt that it was not fair. During that time slavery was spreading faster than diseases and Ms. Auld felt as if it was the most inhumane thing she'd ever heard of in her life. When slave onwers gain that sense of powere they feel as if they are superior to other people(all of which who include african- americans or their slaves).

ReplyDeleteI think that if women behaved like Mrs. Auld then there really wouldn't be as many problems as there are. In general the economy, and civilization would be better. Even if not truly a slave women would still be technically "slaving" for their husbands. As Christian said, with power comes corruption, pretty much whoever gets a taste of power gets their mind messed up.

By reading through the following passage, I have formed a conclusion on the the above question. Which is, that in the passage it states that in a society where women who behave as Mrs.Auld did. Then that society would fall apart. For the slaves would become spoil, discontented and unhappy which could lead to a revolt and end that society.

In reading this paragraph I have noticed that if there was more women with the heart and care that Mrs. Auld has there really would not have been so much problems, like Jeremy B. said. Mrs. Auld started out like someone that was caring and not cruel, almost like a mother figure that Frederick never had. She was teaching him new things that slaves never had the chance to be taught. What she did was strongly fround upon. Then like most women then, and some still today, listened to her husband when he told her to stop what she was doing that is was not right. She seemed to not only want to do right by him but to do better then what was wanted by her. In other words women like her were not wanted or excepted, if they treated a slave with any time of respect.

i think that if women behaved like mrs.Auld then, opinions would be stated more often and that society would be a better place. she is evidence that as people back in those days got slaves the more curl they got. showing that power can change a person from kind hearted to just mean.At the beginning she was nice and was treating the slave equal but ones she was told the different levels of society in those days her personality changed . and she became in power and it just messed things up

I think that if women behaved as Mrs.Auld did, society would be better. Slaves would have been more educated, and well taken care of. Where they couldn't learn to read or write, they were just people who had to work for other people. She showed that she had power and authority instead of being like all the other women, in the society who listened to men. Society would be way different now if the society acted more like Mrs. Auld did.

I woman that behaves as Ms.Auld did in the begining was very kind and sweet. She truly had a heart however that changed and she felt almost as though she had to compete with how cruel she could be. Her behavior shows that authority was the key not respect. Therefore women that act in this manner are in search of autority, recognition, and attention.

i think if women acted or behaved like ms.auld then society would be different. i think that the women back then wanted to be like that. caring and willing to help some of the slaves. but on the other hand thier husbands or the slave asters wouldnt of liked that and probably would of wanted to beat them also, but if women was like that more slaves would have none more then the slave owners would have wanted them to. and maybe things would have been better. but her owning a slave made her seem like she had power and that made her change from the begining to the end,and become mean and like other masters. so i agree with these fellow students on their responses to the prompt.
It says in chapter 7 this quote,"She had bread for the hungry, clothes for the naked, and comfort for every mourner that came within her reach". This quote makes me think that if society was more like Ms. Auld, the world would be a better place. We could all count on each other for help and society would be more caring.

I believe that if women behaved as Mrs. Auld does, the society would be much better one. I also believe that they are trying to say that society is unfair. I believe slavery changed the way people were and how they thought. Lastly i feel like if others acted as Mrs. Auld did then slaves would be more confident on what they could get out of life, because they would be more literate and educated.

If women were to behave like Mr. Auld or even better, i think society will be conpetitive. At the beginning, Mrs. Auld was a sweet lady and then she turned into a lady salvage. Which is similiar to what is happening today except the only diffrence is that we are being corrupted by violence and killing. If society was like Mrs . Auld the men would finally give women the chance to speak and let their voice be heard!

If a woman behaved like mrs. auld society in my opinion would be better because ahe helped him learn to read but had to quit because it was unlawful and she wasnt supposed to do it and soon her husband mr. auld told her that she needed to be cruel and so she listened and did so that tells you that she is very kind at heart but knows how to take charge as well as women in society today

If Women Behaved Like Mrs. Auld, It Would Make Society A Better Place For People. In The Beginning Mrs. Auld Was Nice && Kind Hearted && Then When The Responsibility Of Owning A Slave Got To Her && Changed Her. She Became More Cruel && Authoritative. Society Would Be Different In A Good Way If Everybody Acts Like Mrs. Auld Did. Showing Respect, Authority, Attention && Recognition.

If Women Behaved like Mrs. Auld had a lot of slaves would have been confused. Normally when you are a slave they dont teach you how to Read or Wright at all. They want you as dumb as possible, yet Mrs. Auld wanted him to know this. She changed a lot from when she first got him, as time went on she began to get meaner and meaner. A lot of people need someone like Mrs. Auld these days. If every one had been given a chance like that when they "weren't supposed to". Would make it farther in life.

If women behaved like Mrs.Auld the society would be better. Personally, I think she would have been an inspiration for most women being that she wanted people to learn. She was caring and helpful to Frederick Douglass. Although she had to stop helping slaves because it was against the law, her determination showed that she wanted a change in peoples life.

It shows that in society like slavery became almost like an ipod everyone feeels then need to have it. but it shows how power currupts people how she was corrected and talked into believe she was in the wrong. she was forced to stop by her husband, she felt the need to help him because she knew what postion she was in,

If society had more women like mrs. Auld I believe society would be somewhat better, to me she was nice but very authoritve. Se had the right mindset just didnt know how to go about it. Plus i believe her meaness came from her being able to control someone sinse women were considered beneath the man in those days, her owning a slave made her have a sense of power and control.

If women behvaed like Mrs.Auld did then the slaves would be confused on how their "teacher" was. When her husband foumd out she completely stopped teaching dougla. It showed how superior women were to men. Men completely controlled slaves and their women, and had the power to do what they wanted to them.
In my opinion it is saying that Slavery had a negative effect on people. She used to be nicer, but after owning a slave she became more mean. And also that women had to listen to their husbands because they were above them.

If women would behave like Mrs . Auld , then society would alot better and there wouldn't be as many problems as there were. Mrs. Auld was a nice person , but then owning a slave changed her. Knowing that she had "power" made her meaner .Basically , her husband influenced her to make these decisions and that's what changes society today .

If society behaved as Mrs. Auld did at first then society would be better. But Mrs. Auld instead conformed herself to society and instead of treating the slaves well like she once had, she grew meaner and treated the slaves like society said one should.

What does it say about society if a woman can behave as Mrs. Auld does?
If women can behave like mrs. Auld does then society would be much more better and slaves wouldnt be treated as badly as they are. Mrs.Auld taught Douglas to read and write. If slaves would have all learned to read and write they would have been able to make a living doing something they wanted to do insted of being hurt and put to work. But because of how white people didnt want slaves to be above them they didnt allow them to learn these skills. Insted the slaves that could had to sneak around to learn.
The women in that period did not have as many rights and were dominated by the men of the house. The women with the case of mrs. Auld her husband explains to her why teaching a slave to read could be a bad idea. she begins to be less and less kind to frederick and begins to be like all of the other slave masters who have owned him.
